After welcoming 21,500 parents and grandparents as permanent residents under the PGP immigration category till September 2022, Canada is on its way to admitting 28,667 before the dawn of 2022.
Finally, the Parents and Grandparents Program is back on its track as twice the number of parents and grandparents will reunite with children and grandchildren in 2022 as compared with the previous year. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) reported Canada would welcome close to 16,927 more permanent residents under the Parents and Grandparents program compared with the last year, registering a growth of 144.2% over 2021 and 30.2% over 2019 figures.
Provincial contributions to PGP immigration
Provinces with the highest populations are the ones to admit the maximum number of PGP immigrants, with Ontario welcoming 8,663 parents and grandparents. The growth in various provinces in the number of PGP admissions over the previous year is:
- Ontario – 158.7%
- Quebec – 51.2%
- British Columbia – 156.7%
- Alberta – 172.9%
- Saskatchewan – 141.4%
- Manitoba – 140%
- Nova Scotia – 283%
- New Brunswick – 255.6%
- Newfoundland and Labrador – 166.7%
The process of PGP immigration
Canadian permanent residents and citizens willing to reunite with parents and grandparents submit their Interest to the Sponsor by filling out the relevant form. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) place these in a pool of applicants before conducting a draw. The selected sponsors, through the draw, receive Invitations to Apply and should submit final applications within 60 days of receiving ITAs.
PGP sponsors must qualify for the following eligibility criteria:
- Minimum age 18 years
- Living in Canada
- Status of permanent resident or citizen
- Financial ability to support parents and grandparents
The current application processing time for PGP sponsorship is about 37 months.
