Ontario to Implement Hourly Minimum Wage Increase from October 1, 2024

The hourly minimum wage rise will come into effect from October 1, 2024, in Ontario.

The effective minimum wage in Ontario will be $17.20 per hour from the existing $16.55 as the government of Ontario plans to adopt the increase from October 1, 2024. The new hourly minimum wage rise aims to accommodate the Ontario Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Canadian provinces make annual adjustments in hourly minimum wages to reflect the inflation rate. The highest minimum wage increase among Canadian provinces will be by the government of British Columbia. British Columbia’s hourly minimum wage will be $17.40 from June 1, 2024.

Workers in Ontario can expect an annual pay rise of $1,355 if their weekly working hours are 40. Ontario will also implement special minimum wages from October 1, 2024, benefitting students and individuals working from home.

Ontario workers can expect their minimum hourly wages to touch $18 by October 2025 because of the inflation-based annual wage hike next year.
