New Invitations for Parents and Grandparents Program Announced by Canada

Canada has announced that it will extend invitations to 35,700 potential sponsors under the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) program in May 2024. The invitations will be drawn from the pool of interest to sponsor forms submitted in 2020 and will be sent out over two weeks starting May 21.

The PGP program enables Canadian citizens and permanent residents outside Quebec to sponsor their parents and grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada. The federal government aims to welcome 23,500 new permanent residents annually through this program.

Last autumn, it was announced that immigration under the PGP program would be limited to families of sponsors who had previously submitted interest to sponsor forms. In October 2023, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sent invitations to apply to 24,200 potential sponsors over two weeks, expecting up to 15,000 complete applications.

Under the PGP program, sponsors, parents, and grandparents have 60 days after receiving an invitation to apply to submit a full application. Sponsors must meet specific criteria.

  • They must be at least 18 years old, Canadian citizens, or permanent residents residing in Canada
  • They must be financially stable to support those they wish to sponsor by meeting minimum income requirements for the past three years.
  • Co-signers can be included in the application to increase combined income consideration.

Recent data from IRCC indicates a 3.7 percent increase in PGP immigration by the end of 2023 compared to the previous year. In total, 28,280 parents and grandparents became new permanent residents through the program, while overall immigration to Canada saw a growth rate of 7.8 percent, with 471,550 foreign nationals obtaining permanent residency.
