IRCC Introduces Changes to PGWP Eligibility in 2024

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada implemented several changes to the qualifying requirements of the Post Graduation Work Permit effective February 15, 2024.

The 2024 PGWP eligibility changes will affect international students planning to study and work in Canada. The Post Graduation Work Permit eligibility updates underscore the value of candidates with master’s graduate qualifications for Canada’s booming job market.

The validity of the Post Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) will be up to three years, irrespective of the duration of a student’s master’s program, under the new PGWP guidelines. It will apply to students completing PG programs by February 15, 2024.

Extension of Post Graduation Work Permit will facilitate a smoother transition of students into Canada’s workforce. It will boost their chances of becoming Canadian permanent residents through appropriate PR pathways.

Enhancement of the PGWP eligibility requirements opens countless opportunities for international students aspiring to work and settle in Canada. The new guidelines will facilitate their integration into the Canadian workforce with better and longer work experience.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) addresses issues like lack of student support and quality education by implementing multiple program restrictions. Institutions with curriculum licensing agreements will not be eligible to enroll new international students planning to get PGWPs. The decision does not impact existing students undergoing study programs at these institutions.
