Applicants of permanent residence, through Express Entry selection, need not get an upfront medical examination as of October 1, 2023.
Need for an Immigrant Medical Exam (IME)
Permanent Residence application mandates an Immigrant Medical Exam by a panel physician. Express Entry profile submission requires uploading an IME document. Individuals living in Canada as students or workers need not submit IME while applying for permanent residence.
Overseas Express Entry applicants can upload a blank document to the Express Entry profile builder instead of an IME document. Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will instruct the candidate about the submission of an IME document whenever necessary.
Things to remember
The Immigrant Medical Exam is mandatory for all permanent residency applicants, including family members, although they are not accompanying the PR applicant. These are a few essential things to carry for an Immigrant Medical Exam:
- Valid ID proof
- Four recent photographs
- The latest medical reports for pre-existing conditions
- Details of current medical conditions
The Immigrant Medical Exam (IME) comprises a physical exam, X-ray, laboratory tests, and a history questionnaire. IRCC requires the applicant to approach the panel doctor for an Immigrant Medical Exam. IRCC makes the final decision on the medical exam for approval of the permanent residence applicants.
