IRCC to extend distance learning measures until August 31st, 2023
IRCC allowed international students to study online by living abroad and remaining eligible for Post Graduation Work Permit during the pandemic.
As per its recent announcement on August 25th, 2022, IRCC is extending the distance learning measures until August 31st, 2022. The decision to create a transition period for distance learning measures by IRCC aims at offering time for international students to return to Canada.
Before the pandemic, students needed to complete up to 50 percent of their studies online. The period of online studies reduced the length of the Post Graduate Work Permit.
International students can now complete a maximum of 100 percent study program online subject to applying for a Study Permit before August 31st, 2022. It will not affect their PGWP eligibility.
It implies that the deduction of the online study period from the total length of the Post Graduate Study Permit will apply to international students beginning their programs from September 1st, 2022, to August 31st, 2023.
International students to make a note of these measures:
- Students can earn up to 50 percent credits through online studies from abroad to ensure PGWP eligibility.
- Deduction of the online study period from the total length of PGWP comes into force for students beginning studies from September 1st, 2023.
The Canadian government strives to give preference to students applying for study permits and starting studies in September. Despite this, some study permit applications may not process in time to enable students to start in-person studies for the fall intake.
