International Students holding Post Graduate Work Permits (PGWP) are looking forward to a new PGWP Extension Policy announcement by Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
Post Graduate Work Permits allow international students to work and live in Canada after graduating from a Canadian education institution. Under normal circumstances, international students are eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit only once. IRCC allowed the extension of PGWP during the recent pandemic by 18 months.
Canada continued to allow PGWP extensions in 2022 and 2023, enabling students to maintain their status. According to the recent extension, international students will need a new PGWP extension because the current work permits are due to expire by December 2023.
Canada has a record number of temporary residents in the history. The PR options for international students are limited because of stiff competition.
Canadian Experience Class is a suitable permanent residency option for international students holding Post Graduation Work Permits. The CEC mandates at least one year of Canadian skilled work experience.
The last CEC-specific round of invitations was in September 2021. It is unclear when IRCC will hold CEC draws because Canada prioritizes category-based Express Entry draws. A new PGWP extension is crucial to facilitate international students in Canada to extend their status. Learn more about Permanent Residence options for international students in Canada.
