Canada’s Efforts Pay off as the Latest Immigration Backlog Drops Below One Million Applications

There is a noticeable drop in Canada’s immigration backlog from 1.09 applications on November 30, 2022, to 918,300 on December 31, 2022.

Canada’s immigration inventory also reduced to less than 2 million, according to the IRCC’s January 2023 data. The number of applications within service standards stands at 1,055,500. The immigration inventory comprises all applications, including those waiting for a decision, in backlog, and those within service standards.

The following are the latest figures as per the IRCC data

Temporary Residence

  • Inventory – 1,052,000
  • Backlog – 472,000
  • Within Service Standards – 580,000

Permanent Residence

  • Inventory – 620,800
  • Backlog – 361,300
  • Within Service Standards – 259,500

Citizenship

  • Inventory – 301,000
  • Backlog – 85,000
  • Within Service Standards – 216,000

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) plans to reduce backlogs by implementing various steps. There are plans to accommodate a maximum number of new immigrants by raising targets for permanent residence to reduce the backlog.

IRCC is strengthening its workforce by hiring more employees to speed up the immigration process. There is a continuous review of the immigration processes to reduce steps and use of digital technology. IRCC extended the online application facility to minors below 18 for citizenship applications.
