Canada Witnesses Persistent Growth in International Student Population

Canada expects over 900,000 international students by 2023, based on recent trends.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) forecasts around 1.4 million study permit applications by 2027, according to an internal policy document. IRCC is developing a special category of trusted universities to facilitate study permit applicants.

The paper also mentions the annual growth of 300,000 study permits from 2019 onward. According to the projection, there will be nearly 949,000 study permit applications in 2023. The study permit applications will rise to 1.4 million by 2027.

Canada accepted a historic number of students in 2022, welcoming 551,405 international students. It resulted in a record number of study permit holders, as Canada had 807,750 international students last year.

The latest study permits data from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC) highlights figures between January and June 2023. The number of study permits grew by 77 percent over the corresponding period in 2022. IRCC registered a 49 percent increase by processing over 435,000 new study permits this year. It expects to set a record by issuing over 600,000 new study permits this year.

More international students prefer Alberta, Saskatchewan, and other provinces as their study destinations because studying in popular provinces like Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia does not guarantee affordable housing.
